A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.
