The Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
