Roughly 35,000 individuals may be affected, cautions the US embassy

A significant security compromise in Somalia's e-visa platform could have revealed sensitive details pertaining to tens of thousands of individuals, including American nationals, the American embassy in Somalia has alerted.

It said had received credible reports that "unidentified hackers" had penetrated the Somali government's digital visa application portal, possibly exposing details concerning at least 35,000 people.

The compromised files circulating online comprise names, images, birth dates, marital status, place of residence and email contacts, according to a US embassy statement published on last Thursday.

"This data breach continues to occur and could expose any sensitive details you enter into the application portal," British authorities has additionally cautioned travellers.

"Consider the risks when considering application for a digital visa necessary for visiting the Federal Republic."

Government Response

Government officials have not commented regarding the incident. But the government has transferred visa application system from the previous platform evisa.gov.so to etas.gov.so, without issuing a public clarification.

"Although Embassy Mogadishu is unable to confirm if personal information belongs to the compromise, people who have submitted applications via the digital application platform might be compromised," the official communication declared.

Geopolitical Impact

The revised application procedure requires every visitor, incorporating applicants from the self-declared republic of the breakaway region and the self-governing territory of Puntland, to apply for admission permits online.

Critics say travellers have faced extra fees in specific areas, totaling double charges.

Geopolitical Background

The self-declared republic, which declared independence in 1991, manages its territory via separate governmental bodies but has not been internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities maintains that the area continues to belong to its sovereign territory.

The claimed security incident exacerbates persistent conflicts concerning Mogadishu and northern authorities over control of aviation space. While Somalia re-established total jurisdiction of national aviation space in recent years, Somaliland regularly disputes the current system.

Ongoing Conflict

The disagreement intensified recently when Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro stated Somaliland would not accept Mogadishu's electronic visa and directed that airlines need to acquire clearance from northern authorities when approaching their territorial skies.

Yet leading carriers have declined to process individuals lacking Somalia's e-visa approval.

In the latest development, Hargeisa's international relations official Abdirahman Dahir Aadan again insisted that "anyone travelling to the northern territory can acquire their visa on arrival", stating Somalia's e-visa system posed risks and alerting that "individual details could be accessed by extremist organizations" because of utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has resulted in certain visitors heading to the northern region unable to board flights after being denied boarding because they didn't have the federal electronic visa.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the aviation minister, has stated to news organizations that the instructions - initially declared in recent months - came into effect on the tenth of November.

The minister stated carriers that refuse would be instructed to divert, and asserted multiple planes had been forced to change paths.

Jurisdictional Battle

Video evidence released by Somaliland's aviation ministry appears to show regional aviation officials issuing instructions to international pilots - an action celebrated domestically as a confirmation of northern self-governance.

Nevertheless the federal aviation regulator maintains it retains exclusive regulatory authority over the national airspace information zone (Flight Information Region), that includes all territorial skies. Officials have directed every plane to ignore any guidance coming from sources besides central government.

Authorities alerted that ignoring federal and global flight regulations could generate aviation dangers and lead to "significant legal repercussions".
